newcomers and intimidation

A newcomer to the list wrote to the effect that she was felt terribly 
impressed and somewhat intimidated by how knowledgible we list-folk seem 
to be.

Well...I thought I'd mention for the benefit of all newcomers who might 
be feeling shy -- 

Most of us know a lot about an area or two or three.  It only seems that 
we're so knowledgible because we chime in when its something we know 
about and just listen the rest of the time.  There are certainly a few 
people who are genuinely fluent with vast parts of the field, but most 
of us aren't.  I don't know much of anything useful about at least about 
two thirds of what comes up on this list.  When I do contribute, it's 
usually about contracts or negotiating, not about gardening.  Which fits 
in with how I feel when I try to write something and I'm not in the 
mood, come to think about it.  (What the #!%*@! do I think I'm doing 
trying to write about xxxxx?  I don't KNOW anything about xxxxx.  Or at 
least, not enough.  Not nearly enough.  Not as much as I'll know next 
year, surely.  Or two years from now.  Or five.)
