Re: [NAFEX] Nursery Cans & Flower Pots

Title: [GWL] Re: [NAFEX] Nursery Cans & Flower Pots

* Container suppliers warn that war with Iraq could lead to unprecedented
container prices. The price of crude oil, necessary to manufacture plastic
pots, has risen from $16 per barrel 6 months ago to $35. A war could raise
this price to $50, said Kleis Hensen, v.p. at ITML Horticultural Products.
Suppliers advise growers to buy now because prices likely won't drop any
time soon. Even worse, growers who wait too late to buy may run into
shortages. However, one manufacturer spokesperson, Steve Pavelka, Landmark
Plastic Corp. COO, said shortages are unlikely. In case of war, other Arab
nations would likely increase oil production to account for shortages.

I would like to know what newsletter recommended that gardeners hoard
pots. I think the source can often help us determine how much attention
we choose to pay to a particular suggestion. I just moved to a house
with a deck and had planned to buy several large containers to fill with
annuals and provide color to the deck. So do I run out to the store
today to buy them now (if they are available) or wait until summer when
I can plant.
I like the thread that has developed though: how to obtain
cans/containers on the cheap!! I have to see what my local pizza shop
has to offer (what about rusting?)
