As is often the case, Jeff sums it up for me. I, too, have been reading (I resent that term lurking) through this discussion, and look forward to more. Stay healthy, Jeff...we need you.

Yo GWL gang,
Sorry I've been out of the loop for the last couple of months; it seems that
there is a little prostate cancer going around. Fortunately mine is under
control so I am free to continue to cause trouble for lots more years unless
of course I get shot in a police chase. I certainly have missed a lively
discussion. A very valuable discussion in my view.
As the incompetent chairperson of the technology committee of GWA let me say
that I agree completely with Doug and the others in that GWA and GWL should
proceed on their own separate courses. They should not ignore each other
but GWL should not worry about duplicating or infringing on what might
appear to be GWA territory. Doug's observations about an organization's
evolution is absolutely true for GWA. Back in the early eighties when I
became active in GWA it was basically a social club designed to organize
garden tours and really good parties. I am guilty of introducing some
bureaucracy in the late 80's in that I worked with the board to develop a
long range planning process for the organization. Over the past ten years
it is amazing how formal and procedure bound the organization has become.
As chairman of the technology committee I have to go through all kinds of
hoops to get a decision on an idea. After awhile I stopped even thinking
about it. I will be resigning from that celebrated position and let someone
with more energy take over.
Thank goodness for Lon and GWL. GWA is not able to do what GWL is able to
do; that is not bad or good; just a fact. GWA will never have a web site
that is vital, flexible, and dynamic as the Internet allows. So I feel that
GWL should continue to work with its own to develop and improve on its own
web site. GWA still has many roles that GWL cannot and probably doesn't
want to fill. I intend to remain a member for as long as I can; they still
throw pretty good parties.
Regards,
Jeff Ball
