Some twenty years ago I bought a couple of black 55 gallon plastic drums
for six bucks each. They're not much more now at recycling places. I cut
them in half, a minute with a jig saw, but the resulting tub was higher
than I wanted, so I cut eight inches off the top of each. Turns out those
black eight inch high rings are perfect small raised beds for those
perennials that need perfect drainage.

Those three dollar patio tubs have been outdoors 12 months a year for two
decades and still are as good as new. I like the black better than the
much more expensive and smaller faux terrra cotta jobs from KMart. The
black lets the flowers take center stage. They also come in other colors,
swimming pool blue being the most common, occasionally green.
