Hofstra Flower Show and Questions

Hi all,

Melanie Vassallo, Long Island NY (a lurker on this list)

Rather than inundate you with several posts, I'm going to consolidate all onto one, please bear with me.

Hofstra University and Arboretum will be hosting an indoor flower show on April 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Located in Uniondale, NY (just outside of New York City) this is the only flower show of it's kind on Long Island. Vendors, exhibits and speakers are strictly related to gardening and landscape. For more information visit http://www.hofstra.edu/COM/Arbor/Arbor_flower_show.cfm

This year I have designed and will be installing a 30' X 50' children's garden. The theme is a board game set into a garden. The children will be the pieces moving across the board. My goal? To show families a garden idea that middle income families can install in a small suburban garden for a modest amount of money.

Two years ago I had a Harry Potter Children's garden at this show. The children loved it but not too many people can build a castle in their back yard.

I would love to see somebody from the Garden Writers Association come and run a book signing corner (perhaps some big overstuffed armchairs) and possible a Plant A Row exhibit. Since this is an annual show, perhaps somebody would step up to the plate for next year if not this one?

Questions:
Speaking with Darrell Trout at Atlantic Nurseries symposium two weeks ago I found out about the GWA annual convention to be held on Long Island this September. Due to finance problems I had to let my membership lapse but thanks to an early payment received this weekend, will be renewing my membership today. The convention is to be held at the Melville Marriott which is only 4 miles from my home. I'm brand new at this but would love to come join in the fun, does anybody know what the schedule is? Also, we're hoping to install the board game garden onto our front lawn after the flower show and I'd be glad to show it to any interested parties. Are open gardens in the convention area listed?

On a different topic. Last year a number of you helped me as I was trying to negotiate a payment for my contributing chapters to "The Modern Daylily" due out this summer. I had also been asked for photography, specifically for 10 slides that would be chapter introductions.

I sent 12 slides to the author of the book. He then called and said the slides weren't what he wanted (no specification as to what he DID want). I then sent 30 of my best slides to him so he could choose. Due to a deadline rush, I had no time to make copies of the slides. In a recent phone conversation I was told that he forwarded all 42 slides to Timber Press for them to make the decision.

Here's my question. Would it be pushy for me to contact Timber Press on my own to find out the status of those slides? I can guarantee if they send them back to the author, I'll never see them again. All slides were stamped with my name on the jacket. I'd be happy just to get the ones that they didn't choose for the book.

Thanks for sticking with me this long,
Melanie Vassallo
