Had an experience with my computer that is worth passing along.
My e-mailer is Outlook Express for Macintosh, though this would apply to all computers.
In trying to clear a glitch, I was told that if I went into the preferences and erased the account information, then re-installed it, it would clear the problem. I did that and it cleared the blockage, but apparently the account itself was cleared - all mail in the account, on my computer, was erased with no way to retrieve it.
I was told that not all systems have this flaw. Netscape keeps the mail separate from the account information, so on that I could have erased the information without losing the letters.
So if you, like me, leave letters in your e-mailer for reference or to answer later, be sure to file all of them elsewhere at the same time as backup.
