Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 25, Issue 24

On various medical websites, I found mention of lung ailments that are
common with farm and landscape workers, called "farmer's lung," "compost
lung," "mushroom compost lung," etc. The common thread seemed to be
long-term exposure to small fibers that become airborne when shoveling and
spreading the material. The small particles irritate the lungs and make a
person susceptible to pneumonia and other opportunistic organisms. Most of
the sites said that stopping the exposure would lead to improvement, though
serious damage could take years to mend.
