Re: William Lanier Hunt, horticulturist, writer, member of the RHS
Yes, Bill Hunt was a great friend o ours and a founding member of the
Southern Garden History Society. His papers
would be of great interest as a book. Mary Palmer Dargan, ASLA

Subject: [GWL] William Lanier Hunt, horticulturist, writer, member of the
RHS
I am curious if anyone here has ever heard of the late William Lanier Hunt,
of Chapel Hill, N.C.
who donated a significant portion of the land now occupied by the North
Carolina Botanical Garden at UNC.
He was a professional horticulturist (worked for the DoD during WW2 solving
turf problems at airfields
in the US), author of several books, gardener (specialized in cyclamens),
newspaper garden column writer and
travelling
garden club lecturer (as Alan Chadwick did). He was born in Greensboro NC,
the son of a landscape nurseryman, and
was a
distant relative of mine. During the 16 years I was a landscape designer
and contractor he was an inspiration and
guiding light for me as, in a greater way, he was for many botany students
at UNC and for those who started and
developed the NC Botanical Garden. He was a member of the Royal
Horticultural Society and started a horticulture
curriculum at Sandhills Community College, Southern Pines, NC, patterned
after a similar course of study sponsored
by
the RHS in England. He knew Elizabeth Lawrence and Vida Sackville-West and
wrote a popular book entitled
"Southern
Gardens, Southern Gardeners". If only some motivated and pursuasive person
would convince the Durham Morning
Herald that
releasing the complete archive of his gardening columns for publication in
book form would be a worthwhile
venture.
