Re: Crediting the Gardener/Photo Releases
Margaret Lauterbach noted:
"I think publishers shrink from uncredited locations, as well they
should."
In my experience I have had difficulty in getting many of the
publishers I deal with to carry the photo credit information I
supplied them with e.g. locations, owners, designers. This is
particularly the case with magazines.
In cases where I have supplied a batch of photos and stipulated that
certain ones can only be used where the garden owner is credited, the
publisher has often chosen to use only those photos without the
credit requirement.
There are still some magazines carrying photos without ANY credits,
not even the photographer, and I refuse to supply them.
On the point of gaining garden owners' permission for photo use, one
successful photographer I spoke to passed on his own approach. He
sent a sheet of thumbs of the photos he had taken to the owner,
offering to supply free large size prints of any of the shots they
liked, and at the same time noting that he hoped they would not
object to him making the photos available for publication. In most
cases the gardeners were happy to accept the free prints, and raised
no objections.
