gardener's photo credit

Not true.  Hopefully the audience of the garden photo benefits most of 
all.  While I do need to be paid for my work as a professional 
photographer, I don't really care if I am not credited.  I do this work 
because I care about educating gardeners not for personal credit.

More importantly, photogs should stay away from gardens where the owner 
will not release the photos.  As Rich has pointed out, publishers often 
don't care or don't have time to track down and include the owner's 
info.   Unless the photos appear as a garden profile of an individual 
garden, many, many owners explicitly do NOT want their name mentioned 
as it too often attracts unwanted attention to them or their property.  
Some people think seeing a garden credited it a publication is an 
invitation to visit that garden.  In fact, deep down, that is what some 
owners want when they have the name published.  OK by me.

If I come across a garden where the owner or designer insists on credit 
I just don't take photos unless, of course they are paying me to start 
with.  I do private work for designers all the time.  Some ask me to 
photograph for their portfolio and pay me my fee and do not expect 
their wealthy clients to agree to publication.  Other designers ask me 
to photograph hoping to get things published and I would be foolish not 
to get the owners permission.
