Re: photo releases for National Trust UK

Hidcote and Sissinghurst are National Trust properties.

Some years ago Sissinghurst expressly banned the reproduction of
pictures which identified the property; the number of visitors was
increasing so much that the foot traffic was damaging the gardens and
they expressly requested no publicity of any kind. More recently they
instigated a scheme whereby artists could buy a permit to use the
garden on days that visitors were not admitted; this also covered
editorial photographers but only a few were available on a few
specific days. I'm not sure if this scheme is still in operation. I'm
following up the National Trust situation with the Garden Writers
Guild in Britain and will report back.

Cambridge University Botanic Garden used to have a ludicrous system
under which they charged photographers an enormus fee to cover the
cost of providing a member of staff to accompany the photogrpaher -
to be sure that no flower beds were stepped on, etc.

Kew charge a fee. You can buy an annual permit for Wisley but you
don't need a permit if you don't use a tripod; under their simple but
rough and ready scheme the use of a tripod indicates a professional
photogrpaher.

In the light of earlier discussions, it's worth noting that the
Photographers Group of the Garden Writers Guild in Britain has drawn
up a release forms for download. "In order that photographers, garden
owners and garden designers are properly credited when their
photographs and photographs of their gardens are used, the GPG has
created a Credit Flyer" here -
