It is indeed an editorial and aesthetic decision. Garden Design magazine has been doing this for some time. While others insist in critically sharp pictures from front to back, GD has deliberately gone soft. It gives them a somewhat distinctive look. Sometimes it even works...
You'll notice the same phenomenon with lighting in some shots. Despite the "rules" some publications (look through the current GD again) print photos with extremely bleached out backgrounds so that the shadowed foregrounds are clearly visible. Other magazines wouldn't touch such a shot, preferring pictures taken in overcast conditions where everything is visible throughout the picture.
In both cases the pictures are neither better, nor worse than more "acceptable" shots. It's simply a matter of artistry and taste.
