southern weeds
As Anne noted (and I was remiss for not mentioning it) Florida betony is a
pervasive winter weed. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to pull by hand -
just as long as you get all the roots and do it before it sets seed.
An interesting note (and others may wonder if I'm a modern-day Euell
Gibbons) the rattlesnake weed (as it is called because its tuberous roots
look like rattles) is edible! A member of the mint family (check the square
stems), its white tubers taste like radishes when raw - an herbalist
described the flavor as between mint and horseradish. They can also be
roasted.
