Re: Paxistima canbyi
Doug,
thank you so much for so succinctly summing up this complex issue. Succinctness is apparently a Canadian trait; I suspect all astute Canucks learn to be laconic at an early age because if you take a long time to explain something, your lips and tongue freeze solid and you have to wait until June to finish a sentence.
For a look at how young Americans are following in the proud footsteps of Doug's celebrated Roman general: http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/03/two_canby_high_school_students.html
No, it's not specifically horticultural, but I hope the constituency here doesn't consider this mild digression a complete canard. I found it a great distraction from the torture of this interminable February. Warning: History isn't always pretty.

Subject: Re: [GWL] Paxistima canbyi
Paxistima canbyi was named by the Roman general Canby (circa 125AD)
So the shrub became Peace in our time or Pax-is-tima. I believe it was one
of the herbalists who added the General's name and we now know it as
Paxistima canbyi.
I'm delighted to have clarified the muddification of this elucidative
conversation.
Doug
