Seattle in late April

You may have a damp visit, but there are fabulous gardens to see in
Seattle.

Spring is the best season for the Dunn Gardens (dunngardens.org) -
you'll need to make an appointment.

The Bellevue Botanical Garden (bellevuebotanical.org) has a good
waterwise garden; the huge Northwest Perenial Alliance border is
being completely renovated, so you'll see its early stages.

Kubota Garden (kubota.org) is a Seattle city park - when you're
there, it's hard to believe you're in the middle of a city
neighborhood. Contact the society for a docent tour.

The Carl English gardens (www.nws.usace.army.mil/PublicMenu/Menu.cfm?
sitename=lwsc&pagename=garden) at the Chittenden locks (moving boats
from Puget Sound into Lake Union and then Lake Washington) is full of
unusual plants - plus you get a visit to the fish ladder. The place
is run by the Army Corps of Engineers and so, although you can get a
tree list inside the visitors center, you're mostly on your own.

The Bloedel Reserve (www.bloedelreserve.org) is a lovely visit, but
prefers to be a contemplative natural space, not a garden.

Further afield:
The Chase Garden in Orting (chasegarden.org) is an exquisite spring
woodland garden; on a clear day, you'll be shocked at the sight of
Mt.Rainier looming ever-so-close.

Lakewold Garden (www.lakewoldgardens.org), just south of Tacoma, is a
Thomas Church garden (at least some of it) with great family history.
