Re: Path to a literary agent...

On a non-fiction book you certainly do NOT need to have the whole book
finished before shopping it. What you do need to have done though, is a very
thorough non-fiction book proposal....which will include, among quite a bit
more, some sample chapters from your book.
I've sold books with agents and without an agent, and it isn't easy either
way. As far as getting TV deals and offers to lecture, my own experience is
that this is something you'll probably need to set up yourself. Most
literary agents are far too busy to be doing a writer's PR work for him/her.

Subject: [GWL] Path to a literary agent...

> I've been hearing conflicting advice about finding a literary agent for a
non-fiction, humorous garden design book concept I'm working on. My
reasoning for going the agent route is that I intend to "be" more than a
book and am seeking someone interested in a multi-faceted client who can
also work in TV, lecturing, etc.

outline/TOC for the book, a few sample chapters and possibly a
professionally designed layout of a few sample pages; then B) starting the
query letter process and having the above-mentioned proposal ready to go.

unanimous consensus (5 people; all fiction writers) is that I need to have
the entire book written before I start the query process.
