alstroemeria

I have grown alstroemeria in central California, but not in hostile
zone 5. However, since alstroemeria has thick roots, something like
asparagus, I'd be tempted to grow them in large pots, and try to
carry them over the winter in a sheltered area, such as a garage, and
then start them into growth in the warmer weather of spring. This
might work the same as for dahlias, and the flowers of alstroemeria
are worth taking a risk for.
