Impatiens Downy Mildew
Hello!
My client, Garden Crossings, an online and retail walk-in nursery in
Michigan has, coincidentally, an article about downy mildew that we're
polishing up for publishing Monday. (I wish we were done with it today.) It
is geared specifically for the home gardener. I will share the link when it
is up.
As part of their response to the Impatiens walleriana downy mildew issue,
Garden Crossings is offering the Divine series of New Guinea Impatiens for
purchase in bedding flats this year. One of the difficulties, I think, with
New Guineas, in addition to the lack of complete deep shade tolerance, is
that they are expensive when grown from cuttings into larger pots. The
solution of offering bedding flats of these seed-grown New Guineas will be
a nice alternative. While their foliage is a bit different, the flowers are
quite similar, if not more robust.
I have, personally, ordered bedding flats from Garden Crossings before. I
wanted big, beautiful plants that were not so treated with growth
regulators that they would never snap out of it and grow. So, while
ordering a flat of bedding plants online might seem odd (it did to me
before I had the experience), I can speak from personal experience, that
they were worth it--and not just because Garden Crossings is my client. I
was really impressed with the shipping and the quality of the shipped
flats.

I was personally sad to see the demise of impatiens in my garden because,
ever since I can remember, my mom has planted rows of white impatiens at
her house in every summer. So, once I had my garden, I planted them too,
because they made me think of home. It is possible that consumers'
attachments to their impatiens is sentimental. I really had no other reason
to plant them. Caladiums give me the same effect.
