Author Earnings
I don't know if any of you read the "writing" press. But if you're at all
interested in writing a book or being published, this latest little
contretemps in the book world is a great starting point for deciding about
whether to take a legacy publishing deal or do it yourself.
Start by going to http://authorearnings.com/ sign up to enter (free) and
then read/analyze that data. It's a one day scan of the top 7000 Amazon
ebook sales and it shows how self-publishing authors are doing much, much
better than anyone knew or expected. There's another scan coming out
shortly that reaches down to the 50,000 BookRank level.
I met Hugh Howey last weekend at the Savannah Book Festival and we chatted
for a few minutes before his talk. When I told him about my publishing
numbers, he said I was one of a thousand people he had chatted with with
exactly the same the same story. We were making a decent living away from
the traditional routes.
If this subject interests you, google "fisking hugh howey" and you'll pull
articles from Konrath, Shatzkin, Howey etc
But if you're not interested in self-publishing and making money writing
books, let it slide by.
And for the record - I'm with the self-publishers on this one (as if you
didn't know) :-)
