This *is* a great thread.  I am in the midst of working to promote my book coming out in May from the University Press of New England. Here's a link to my author page at the publisher's website:

At 25 "Likes" you can customize the URL of your Facebook author page to something that's not a random string of numbers and letters, as you can see from my own URL.  I got the required 25 Likes in a day just by inviting all my Friends on my personal page to Like my author page.  Facebook makes it easy to do that.

This is my first gardening book (my publishing background is mostly in magazines), and I don't know yet whether I'll set up a separate page if and when I have another gardening book on another topic.  I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I am also making sure that there are plenty of links from my business website (www.amyziffer.com, in operation for many years now) to my FB author page and my publisher's website, as well as the reverse.  I don't tweet, although I have a Twitter account—it just doesn't suit me.

The fact that books can be purchased these days on a pre-order basis means that marketing and promotion work begins 6 months prior to publication.  I am hoping that eventually I'll be able to see sales figures from the pre-publication time frame; I'm not sure if my publisher will be able to provide me with that.
