[GWL]: Plural and poetry
I agree with getting annoyed with incorrect use of data. "These data
show. . . " and "The data are consistent with. . . "
Another one that gets me is media. "The internet as a medium seems to
be overtaking the rest of the media such as radio, TV, and
newspapers."
And, similarly to criteria/criterion, there is phenomena/phenomenon.
Now, can anyone come up with one of my favorite poems, which sounds
like Ogden Nash, but I don't ever remember seeing attribution. It
goes something like this:
"If the plural of box is boxes, why isn't the plural of fox, foxes.
If the plural of mouse is mice, why isn't the plural of house, hice.
It probably has goose/geese and moose/meese, perhaps ox/oxen and
several other memorable pairs in it.
Jog your memory, anyone?
