Here's a topic that my husband (who is a copy editor) loves to address!
He says that in the AP stylebook "compare with" is used when two things
are different (Compared with Acer palmatum, Acer macrophyllum has big
leaves) and "compare to" is used when two things are similar (I compare
Dan Hinkley to E.H. Wilson as a plant hunter).
