Re: [GWL]: Can we create our own markets?

There have been several items about publishers reducing what they will

The news of various book publisher downsizing is certainly disturbing, but
the leaner book house presents opportunities. I was talking with a victim
of book publishing layoffs, and he said that publishers are doing so in
order to build lean, mean and profitable businesses. Instead of carrying
the overhead of full-time editors, designers, artists, etc., publishers are
now using contract employees, who carry their own burden, and book
packagers. Packagers are increasingly attractive to big book houses,
because these small companies usually specialize in a category such as
gardening or cookbooks, and they have a set formats and processes that allow
them to produce a book cheaper than a big book house could.

The opportunities, as I see them, are for finding the right packagers who
can sell your book more effectively than you can. Also, picking up editing
jobs on contract should be easier now, especially if you have previously
edited books.

About finding the right packagers--I think we are at a disadvantage, because
this trend is in its baby stage. Writer's Digest puts out an annual
Writer's Markets book, and they list only 20 packagers in the 2000 issue,
compared to 1,150 book publishers. I've read articles praising the packager
as an efficient resource for doing niche subjects. I've also read that
packagers don't treat authors fairly.

Do any of you have information to share about book packagers? Also, what
are your opinions and/or experiences with them?
