I was confused, too and looked it up in the dictionary which gives the preferred form of the
plural as "fox."

I am speculating that it's one of those common usage things. I always have said "foxes." So did
Lillian Hellman in her play "The Little Foxes" so I assumed it was correct. I bet so many people
used the wrong plural without a clue that they were wrong that the dictionaries finally allowed
it.
