Re: [GWL]: Book Fees

Fees vary, depending on number of pages, the perceived market for the book,
whether the author is supplying publishable photos or art, and what, if any,
royalties the author will recieve. In my experience, which is limited, the
high end for flat fees (no royalty deal) is $35,000 and the very low end is
$10,000. Also in my very limited experience, the ability to negotiate
depends on the financial health of the company. Generally, there isn't much
wiggle room. The editor has to bring in the book at a certain budget level,
and has fixed costs such as prepress, scanning, printing, binding, and paper
to figure into the amount as well as variable fees for designers,
photographers, and illustrators. The only way to increase pay to the author,
in many cases, is to decrease art and/or photos. But it takes a lot of cuts
to make a big difference. Photographers and artists aren't getting rich
either.

I hope other people also respond to this question. I'd like to get a general
sense of what people experience.
