Re: [GWL]: Book Fees
Fees for books vary widely depending on the economy, the expectations for
the book, the size of the print run, whether you're providing text and
photography or just text, and so forth. Try to negociate a good royalty fee.
A large advance is great if you don't expect the publisher to make that
money back (not a Good Thing for the publisher!), but once the book has
earned it's advance, then your income comes from the royalties.
Royalties often come on a sliding scale. For example (taken from one
of my contracts):
Trade - U.S. Hardcover
10% to 10,000 copies (after advance is earned)
12.25% 10,001 - 20,000 copies
15% 20,0001 copies and thereafter
Trade - U.S. Paperback
6% to 10,000 copies
7.5% 10,001 copies and thereafter
Foreign - Hardcover
5%
Foreign - Paperback
3.5%
Publisher-owned book clubs
5%
(Note: these percentages are on the list price of the book)
Good luck,
Catriona Tudor Erler
