RE: [GWL]: public speaking

I think it all depends on the garden club.  I am on our board and am in
charge of speakers and programs...our garden club is over 700 members and
our seating is for 400.  Depending on the speaker, the place is usually 250
plus and if it's a special speaker then we are packed out.  Our club
membership includes the regular speakers and they get paid 100.00 for
speaking.  If it's a special speaker then they get their rate and we charge
our membership 3.00 per member or 6.00 per non member to attend.  It works
for us, especially when you can come listen to speakers like David Tarrant,
Brian Minter, Marjorie Harris etc for 3.00!

Bearing in mind that this is Canadian...it still works for us and as long as
I break even my treasurer is happy and the members are happy.  I am frugal
though and make my speakers take regular seating in flight :) We sometimes
share our speakers with other clubs to share some of the expenses, but it
always seems to work out.

People do not realize what a challenge it is looking after this area of a
garden club..but the rewards are worth it because we have met some wonderful
speakers that normally a smaller garden club could not afford.
