Re: [GWL]: speaking fees

Garden clubs do pay but you have to be firm about being worth it. I started
at $50 for slide talks about five years ago. But after teaching evening
courses on perennial garden design at a botanical garden and a community
college, and having many pieces in Canadian national magazines, and a couple
of features on my garden in a national women's mag and the local paper, I
don't do garden clubs for less than $250, and if they require an hour's
drive, I ask for extra to cover my mileage expenses. Once I have a book out
there next year, I'll raise the fee again.

Until you have a reputation, you may have to do talks for very little money,
however, that will gain you experience and a reputation locally, and once
you have that, you must say no anyone who won't pay or won't make it worth
your while in other significant ways. Sometimes, if you have a book or
garden workshops to flog, or you are guaranteed some good publicity, it can
pay to speak for very little, as long as it doesn't end up costing you. At
least, get your expenses covered.
