Depends on how technical you want your material.  I agree that you really can't beat Alan Armitage but an extremely comprehensive...and worldly view...of perennials was written by Jelitto and for a long while it was accepted as the international reference.  I think Timber Press has published it in the U.S.  And if you're computer literate Armitage also has a wealth of perennial information published on CD ROM.
