Dear Andrew:
You might include a few drainage holes in the bottom of your
home made planting bag. The average gardener has a tendency to over water
plants and drown the roots, which is just as fatal for the plant as cooking the
roots.
For many years greenhouses, growing commercial tomatoes, have
used this type of bag culture. They place these on a concrete floor and
when the crop is finished producing they can throw out the plant and planting
bag. The floor can then be washed down with a disinfectant to prevent the
spread of disease. More planting bags are then placed on the floor and the
next crop started.
