We're still running, Doug. We're leaner and meaner, the the managers have had to take on a lot of
extra duties - but we're there and meaning to stay.

Suite101 never paid big money. A weekly writer got $25 a month. It was basically to cover
internet connection costs. Many of us are not there for the money, but for the exposure, the
experience, the discipline of learning to meet deadlines and for the contacts we've made. (I
wouldn't have met you, otherwise. ;-)

Some editors felt that the "pay" such as it was made them instant professionals. But to my
surprise and relief, we only lost about 100 editors as a result of that announcement. We had
already been cleaning house and eliminating deadwood before that and were actually down to a
little over 1000 before the announcement.

And people are still applying.
