Carol,

Vines can be tricky when they are on a house. Before you chose a vine, you
should take into consideration the character of the structure, how much
weight it will support, the texture and permanence of the surface, the means
of adhering the vine to the wall, etc. A wet vine in a windstorm can weigh
a ton. Paint on stucco can flake off, taking the little suction cups of
Virginia creeper with it. Tendrils or shoots can insinuate themselves
under shingles and clapboards, distorting and even breaking them. On the
other hand, ivy can actually protect a brick wall, shielding the bricks from
the elements and creating an insulating dead air space between the leaves
and the wall, thus raising the temperature inside by several degrees. And
it comes in a wide range of colors and leaf forms. Selecting a vine for a
wall is never JUST an aesthetic decision. Perhaps you could give us a few
more details so that we can give you more informed recommendations.
