Sorry, Lon...

I agree that Virginia Creeper will handle the North side of your wall...and 
winds...and dynamite...and...  In my Zone 5-6 area it is so invasive I would 
like to blast it out.  It is also very harmful to structures as mentioned 
above.  If you want a chunk, come and dig all you want!

Climbing Hydrangea is beautiful, but it can grow to 25-30 feet and it is very 
heavy when mature.

Maybe you should look at a tall blooming or colorful leaf shrub alternate.

To bring this back to topic...this illustrates a problem I see in 
"yardeners".  Some will have an impossible growing situation that will not 
support the kind of plant, vine or shrub they want.  (Not that this one is 
impossible.)  I think it is our job as garden educators to help other 
gardeners understand there are many other solutions than the one that is 
firmly planted in their mind...no offense here Carol...honest :>)
