RE: [GWL]: Top Selling Trees and Shrubs

I confirmed at the MNLA trade show that birches are not a big seller in
Michigan - red maples, littleleaf lindens, white ash, pin oaks lead the
list.  River birches are apparently becoming more popular.  So the figures
that Tom pulled from that report were not accurate which happens in this
industry.  It is almost impossible to get good data since the industry is
such a mom and pop operation.
Michigan State says that the average life span of street trees is 30 years,
still a lot fewer than the 100 to 200 years many of them could have in the
woods.

I live in Michican.  I KNOW we aren't planting birches.  They have some
sort of disease and many who planted them in their yards are having to
cut them down!

Also, I believe the average lifespan of a "street tree" is more than 8
years.  I've lived in this one neighborhood for 15 years now and none of
our "street trees" have been replaced.
