    I'd guess is that there will be many different opinions on this. A good,
tough agent can get you a deal that is certainly better than what you'd be
able to get yourself, a higher royalty rate, more free author's copies, a
larger cash advance. But the agent will get around 15% of the take too,
forever and ever.
    For selling garden books, an agent probably isn't necessary. For selling
fiction though, an agent almost certainly is necessary. It is also easier to
find an agent for nonfiction than it is for fiction. As to a publicist, my
feeling is that you will be your own best publicist.
