[GWL]: Agent or no agent?

I have only recently been reading messages, so I apologize if this topic
has been covered before. I would like some advice/reactions from
writers to having or not having an agent.

My first book will be out in December (agentless), and I am writing more
and more for national magazines (in addition to my weekly garden feature
in our Seattle newspaper). I am beginning discussions with a publisher
about my next book.

Do agents help? Should I continue to go it alone? Is it better to have
a publicist rather than an agent?
