Very, very important to put your lists on no-mail if you set up an
autoresponder. Otherwise, each message from the list creates a response,
and each of the responses creates a response, and......well, you see where
this is heading. I experienced this when a colleague on another, very
low-traffic list left her office for 2 days and put on an autoresponder. I
hate to imagine what might happen with this list!

A better trick is this. Most ISPs will let you have more than
one email address. Use one of them only for subscribing to
mailing lists and other non-urgent newsletters and so on. When you're
on the road, simply go into your email software and set it up so it
only collects email from your other email address. This is easy in
Eudora on the Mac and is, I gather now easy in the latest version of
of OE. When you get home, turn on your email address for mailing
lists; you'll then pick up your backlog and not actually miss
any.
