Interesting that you should mention this aspect of the
garden...they are there and I must admit for the first few years in my own
gardening life, I had to resist the urge to squish everthing in sight! Now
I know better :)
The
major job I have with my own garden club is finding speakers for the
meetings...I am blessed in that we have a good sized club that can afford some
of the best speakers..and one of them is coming to our January meeting.
John Acorn, the Nature Nut...(you can read up on him under our Edmonton
Horticultural Society events calendar for January...this fellow is wonderful at
showing us the variety and beauty of so many creatures that inhabit our
gardens...he is a super speaker and held in high regard. A writer,
speaker, tv personality with his own shows and brand of unique entertainment
while at the same time teaching us very basic things..a different slant on
gardening ...but a very necessary one.

Subject: Re: [GWL]: resources on yucky garden problemsI'd be interested to know what books/web resources people on the list would recommend to gardeners and garden writers for dealing responsibly and sensibily with common garden problems such as pests, diseases, weeds, critters, and so on.By the way, I highly recommend Eric Grissel's new book from Timber Press, Insects and Gardens. It's a wonderful read with lots of food for thought, practical advice for gardeners and good photos of lovely and not so lovely insects. There's even a section on getting over your fear of insects (a decade in the garden did it for me, though I wasn't all that phobic to begin with.). The book is written with humor, expert insight (Grissel is an entomologist) and a lot of wisdom. I give it an A+++ . You'll come away with an appreciation of insects.-Yvonne Cunnington, Ancaster, Ont.
