Ok, Jeff, which pepper is it? We in the seed industry want to know.
Rose Marie
There is no one pepper that is "best" for everywhere. That is my point.
When I look at peppers in Johnny's Seeds, or Burpee, or Ferry Morse I know
that among the 6 to 12 sweet pepper varieties offered by those fine
companies, only one or two have a chance to be "best" in Central Michigan,
the rest will be acceptable but not "best". If I am going to the trouble to
plant and care for a garden and then cook the results, I really would like
to grow those varieties that have proven to be "best" for my area. I could
check with the folks at Michigan State to see if they have done any pepper
trials. I might find some gardening nut who grows 83 different varieties of
peppers somewhere in Michigan, or I can just keep trying all the varieties,
two or three at a time, until I narrow the "best" variety down. Of course
over the five years, over 30 new varieties of sweet pepper will come on the
market all with fantastic descriptions. Every pepper has its "best" place,
some in the north east, some in the mid west and some in the south, not
counting some for the north west and then maybe all are "best" in the 17
zones of Southern California. When the seed industry begins to collect
regional test data and begin to market regionally, then I'm will to bet they
will sell more seeds. Ferry Morse stopped publishing their hard copy
catalog. I bet they could have their Internet catalog begin to work toward
regional "bests" over time because the data is out there; it just needs to
be pulled together.
So endeth the soap box for this day.
Jeff
