Jeff, in the Pleistocene age, when DH was working on his Ph.D., we lived in 
MSU student housing.  In front there was a fruit tree that had been part of 
an experiment.  I think they had started to grow the tree upside down, so 
the branches reached out then up toward the sun/light, then when they 
turned it right side up the bent ends of the branches reversed direction, 
reaching for the sun/light.  It would make sense for fruit growers to grow 
wide trees instead of tall ones.  An ankle biter who caused major trouble 
in the entire housing complex systematically peeled all of the bark on the 
trunk.  I yelled at him and he ran.  I've been wondering what else MSU has 
done, pruning or training-wise, to facilitate fruit growing.  Margaret
