[GWL]: Extremely egregious

I just got off the phone with one of my editors, who told me something
astonishing: He had heard that one of the most prestigious New York slicks
that specializes in high-end homes had asked for money to get a story in the
magazine! Evidently an interior designer had contacted them concerning a
project, and this was what had been implied, if not boldly stated. It makes
sense, in a sick way: One story in that magazine, and your career is made for
life. The editor said he had no reason NOT to believe the designer, but how
outrageous ("extremely egregious" was his term). Have any of you heard of
this sort of thing? Any comments?
