I am not knowledgeable, but did buy my domain name a year before I launched 
my website. When I started the site, it took little effort (3 or 4 emails) 
and maybe $20 to put the two together. I recommend securing your domain name 
once you decide on it so it's yours when you decide what you want to do with 
it.
