Re: [GWL]: Finding time to write with children
Hi ya'll,
I started my 'fulltime' writing career (spending retirement cash on computer
from last 'real' job) in part so I could be home with the young ones. They
did, like Zoey, have a tablet near my desk, and soon their own computer. I
also found that taking plenty of vitamins allowed me to work while they
napped. Soon, castoff equipment became their favorite toys (defunct cell
phones, etc) Now that the youngest is 12, she has her office set up in the
attic and at times, her desk is cleaner than mine by a long shot. She
calendars her assignments for academic and extracurricular activities, and
never misses a deadline. Once he got to high school, my smart son figured
out how to take a list with him and stop at the grocery, dry cleaner, bank,
etc, on his way home - thus giving him the all important vehicle access all
teens crave and giving me more time to write.
So my advice is - don't make the work a secret or sacred space- and it will
become their world, too. And it helps to cultivate selective hearing, so you
can tell the noises of joy from the other kind and don't have to interrupt
your flow.
By the way, the son is a National Merit Semifinalist and wants to be a
writer. :)
