Re: [GWL]: A New Rant
I agree with Lon. Some of these do need to be qualified. For example, No. 23
about straw and hay causing weeds in the garden. It all depends!
Clean wheat straw is a delight. True, there are usually some wheat seed heads
left in the straw, but if they're a nuisance, they're easy to pull out.
Otherwise, let the wheat mature and use it in dried flower arrangements.
Straw from any field which is poorly kept and weedy, however, can cause a
nightmare of weeds the following year(s) as can orchard grass straw or hay,
either of which can contain seeds of this tough perennial. I spent several
years ridding my Virginia garden of orchard grass after mulching it one year
with orchard grass straw. Not fun!!
