Re: [GWL]: Salt Hay

Salt hay is harvested in the salt marshes of New Jersey.  It's used extensively on the East Coast as a winter mulch and as insulation by some masons who need to add curing time to concrete work.  It's virtually weed free, breaks down very slowly and can be used over and over for a period of years.  When used as a garden winter mulch it simply needs to be fluffed once or twice during the winter then removed with a long tine fork in early spring.  Applied to a fluffed thickness of 2-3 inches it gives winter protection  that's really hard to beat.  We used to use hundreds of bales in the nursery for overwintering perennials in pots then at the end of the winter is was simply raked into the isles where it became a summer-long weed mulch/barrier. It's been harder and harder to come by due to environmental regulations that govern it's harvesting and poor weather can also stall and limit the harvest.
