RE: [GWL]: A New Rant/salt marsh hay

Ruth Stout used salt marsh hay. I gather this is largely grasses cut in
genuine hay stage from salt marshes. That is, it is hay, not straw. It
probably didn't contain much in the way of weed seeds, and any it
contained would be of plants that thrive in salt marshes, not gardens.
It was probably great stuff for those who had access to it. Ruth Stout
wrote best-selling books as well as articles in Organic Gardening that
are reprinted regularly to this day, and much writing, alas, is simply
uncritical rewording of other people's writing. So people who have
never and will never see a bale of salt marsh hay still read about it
and even write about it regularly.
