RE: [GWL]: rolling the lawn
Men need to have a nice flat smooth surface on their lawns and therefore the
roller was invented, probably in the early 12th century (grin). Rolling
works best when the soil is still wet and malleable. So that is when men do
their spring thing. What they are really doing is compacting the soil so
badly that the lawn is going to be growing in major stress for the rest of
the entire season. The roots are not likely to get more than 2 inches deep
and they want 4 to 6 inches at least. There is little air space left and
thus there is poor drainage, especially if your soil is clay. But the man
is happy. He never makes the connection between his good rolling job and
all the problems with insects and disease that he has later in the season.
Man rolls his lawn mostly because that is what his father did, and his
father before him; ah tradition.
When you have humps in the lawn you usually have depressions; mountains and
valleys. The solution if there are just a few humps, is to dig off the top
of the hump and replant with seed. If the whole lawn has humps and
depressions, the solution, if you don't want to renovate the entire lawn, is
to spread top soil so it fills the depressions up level with humps. Then
overseed and give the roller to the next door neighbor. That way he rolls
his lawn and it never looks as good as yours.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but why is this bad? My husband wants to roll
our lawn later this spring after it dries a bit and if it's a bad idea, I
need to let him know. We have several bumpy spots, so that's why he wants
to roll it.
