RE: [GWL]: a new "rant"
One of my all-time favourite gardening myths is that you should add broken
clay pots (crockery) to the bottom of a potfor drainage. The author of this
myth lacked training in rudimentary science, as actually, it slows down the
drainage, as the water has to go ALL AROUND the big chunks of crock before
it goes out the hole at the bottom.
The best way to speed up drainage is to put something very small - fine
sand, for instance, in the bottom couple of inches of the pot. Water then
flows through unimpeded. I use broken clay (or broken styrofoam egg
cartons, etc.) only if I have way too much space for the roots, and I'm too
cheap to fill the pot entirely with soil. Plus it makes the pot lighter to
carry.
