[GWL]: Need advice on garden photog. & teaching in Texas

Hi everyone:

My husband is a teacher with the Edmonton Public School system, which is
(like many other jurisdictions in this province) about to go on strike.
Government here isn't much interested in giving decent funding to
education.  Knowing that, a couple of weeks ago, education rep's from
Texas came up here looking for recruits.  Apparently they need several
thousands of teachers.  My husband is tempted to apply, since he's
nearing the end of his working career.  His specialty is band and jazz
(he's also a professional musician), and he was told there would be no
problem finding employment as a teacher.  I'm interested since it would
present me with an opportunity to photograph gardens outside our
very-limited zone 3a (Canadian zone system).  For anyone living in or
familiar with teaching and/or gardening in Texas, can you give us some
advice off-List re:

1.  working conditions for teachers in Texas (e.g. overcrowded classes,
adequate equipment and physical facilities, major discipline or personal
safety problems, amount of respect from community and students, salary
in relation to cost of living, etc.)

2.  potential opportunities for doing garden photography - both stock
and assignment

3.  living conditions (amount of violence and gun-carrying, quality of
health care, temperature extremes, cultural and recreational
opportunities, etc.)

4.  potential opportunities for gigs, especially jazz gigs (husband
plays double bass).
