I agree wholeheartedly, Jeff. I'm building a professional site now to showcase my garden writing and photography -- my web designer calls it a "brochure site." It's designed to inform my clients and prospective clients about my professional experiences and capabilities. To wait for the web crawlers to find your site takes 6-12 months, but I can contact a prospective client and lead them to my site today. It lends credibility and professionalism to my work 24/7, but I still have to market myself.
For anyone interested in learning more on this subject, I recommend Guerilla P. R. Wired by Michael Levine. He discusses how to plan a publicity campaign using the web, how to "start small but think big" in your own hometown (hoping to be on Oprah someday) and the incredible "viral PR" methods that made the Blair Witch Project movie the highest return on investment movie ever made, with no publicity costs. It's fascinating reading for a conservative nurseryman like me who is trying to "go global."
